In recent interview with the Hollywood Gazette, Hollywood CRA director Jorge Camejo Expressed concern over the parking situation on Hollywood Beach during construction of the Margaritaville Hollywood project and after it’s completion.

When asked about the CRA’s plan for parking and traffic during construction and loss of revenue, by the Gazette in an interview over the summer of 2011, Camejo responded that they may need to make an amendment to Chapter 157 of the city code in order to accommodate parking while the project is under construction. He stated that currently the city code requires all parking ares to be finished with an asphalt surface. And that the intent of provisional parking is to provide relief for the beach area parking demand at minimal cost.

I assume that means that they would like to create parking areas that are possibly gravel or grass or some other surface that would be less costly than a finished parking lot, at least temporarily… although this was not directly stated.

The CRA is apparently also actively pursuing opportunities for creating additional permanent public parking at various locations along the beach. As this is apparently a major issue in it’s current situation and the active street renewal projects that are currently underway are eliminating even more parking spaces, something will need to be done to address this. However no clear answer was given in the interview.

As far as revenue impact is concerned, this is currently an unknown. The CRA is apparently working with the City Parking Department to determine the revenue loss from the reduction in of parking on the beach. This analysis could serve as a basis for the CRA Board to consider payment of an annual impact fee to the City of Hollywood to compensate for the loss of revenue in future years.

While this may be a solution to assist with the loss of revenue, it does address the greater issue of beach parking.

Hopefully they will figure out a solution before Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort is built… Maybe a parking barge in the intracoastal isn’t such a bad idea after all.
