Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Brand Going Global

Although South Florida (and the Florida Keys) may be the real home of Margaritaville, the new Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort is a brand that appeals way beyond South Florida. The Jimmy Buffet song, “Margaritaville” was written in 1977 and describes a lifestyle and a place (many think at the bottom of bottle of tequila in Key West). Ten years later, in 1987, Jimmy Buffet opened his first Margaritaville Restaurant right on Duval Street in that island town of Key West.

The  new Four Diamond AAA rated oceanfront resort in Hollywood is part of a booming hotel business headed by recording artist and entrepreneur Jimmy Buffett and his business partner John Cohlan.

There are currently eight other Margaritaville resorts in development with one scheduled to open later this year in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Billionaire Warren E. Buffett, a friend but not a relative of Jimmy Buffett, told the New York Times, “He understands his brand, which has substantial reach. One of his secrets to his success is that he never really loses any fans.”

Although the first Margaritaville Restaurant in Key West continues to be a success even today, the second Margaritaville restaurant location in New Orleans flopped.

In 1999 another Margaritaville launched at the Universal Orlando Resort and has been a boom ever since. Cohlan told the New York Times the restaurant last year had about $22 million in sales.

The Margaritaville restaurant chain has grown further and soon will expand into California for the first time with a location at Universal Studios Hollywood. [The New York Times]
