Beach Renourishment Update – January 2012
Construction is progressing ahead of schedule for the Hollywood Beach Interim Beach Renourishment Project (Project). The contractor, Eastman Aggregates, began work on December 8, 2011 and is expected to be completed by the end of January 2012 prior to marine turtle nesting season.
North Segment
The North Segment of the Project (area of beach between Sherman and Wilson Streets) has been completed with 8,100 tons of sand, and a vegetated dune was refurbished at Thomas Street. This quantity of sand is significantly less than the estimated quantity of 27,000 tons for this area due to accretion (addition of sand) occurring since the 2009 surveys were performed. The accretion is likely the result of the County’s 2005 renourishment of the John U. Lloyd Park beach section.
South Segment
Construction began the week of December 12, 2011 on the South Segment, which extends from Fox Grove Terrace south to the Hallandale Beach City line. Beach conditions in the northern section of this segment (Fox Grove Terrace to Laurel Terrace) did not require additional sand due to seasonal conditions. However, the area will be monitored and beach fill may be added before the contractor demobilizes at the end of the project.
The southern area (of the South Segment) has experienced heavy erosion, primarily in the area south of the Trump Development and extending past the Diplomat. The beach area in the vicinity of the Diplomat has been an erosion “hot spot” for many years with average (long term) shoreline erosion rates at 10 feet per year based on historical survey data back to 1980, however, recent reports through 2009 indicate erosion rates of more than 17 feet per year. Although this stretch of beach will continue to be an area of high erosion, it is expected that renourishment efforts to the north will continue to contribute sand (down drift) benefitting this hot spot.
In preparation for construction, the Coastal Systems conducted pre-construction marine resource surveys of the nearshore hardbottom in October, 2011. These surveys showed that more of the hardbottom had been uncovered than previously thought, which brought the hardbottom limits landward, or closer to shore. Because the project permits do not allow impacts to nearshore hardbottom, Coastal Systems had to redesign the beach fill project to maximize the fill placed, but avoid impacts to hardbottom. In some areas of the south portion of the southern segment, the fill template will be shifted slightly shoreward and the fill volume reduced. The resulting beach width will be reduced on average by approximately 10 feet in order to comply with permit requirements. Overall there will be a net reduction of approximately 15% of the contract volume of sand, which will result in cost savings for the Project. The project is planned/designed as an interim (maintenance) project, therefore adjustments of fill volumes and templates are based on the changing beach conditions.

Hi, i had a question so let me get this straight the beach resort for magraitaville is still in process right because my dad is a tourist bus guy and they sent him to take the tourists there and he is in fourtlauderale and he has no idea where to go because we cant find a address but im just reading that its not even built yet?
It is still in process. They are anticipating to break ground in June and begin construction in July 2012. It is currently set to open in 2014. It will be a while before the tourist can be bused over. It is going to be built at Johnson St. between A1A and the Ocean. The location currently has a parking lot and a recreational park.
